Joint Replacements Types

Total Ankle Replacement Surgery

Arthroplasty ankle replacement surgery is a procedure that replaces damaged portions of your ankle with new, artificial components. During surgery, damaged cartilage and bone is removed from the joint, and the remaining bones are reshaped to fit the artificial joint. The bones are the large (tibia) and small (fibula) bones of the shin, and the foot (talus) bone, on which the tibia and fibula rest. The artificial joint is attached to these bones. Screws may be inserted into the tibia and fibula, or a bone graft may be done.

Total Hip Replacement (Arthroplasty)

Total Hip Replacement is a surgical operation involving the replacement of the cup-shaped hip socket and the ball of the thigh bone that have worn from injuries, arthritis, or from other conditions which deteriorate the cartilage and bone of the joint. In cases requiring Total Hip Replacement, the cartilage becomes worn and the underlying bone develops spurs and various irregularities which produce pain and loss of motion. Expect to stay in the hospital for one to three days following surgery.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery

A total knee replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty, involves removing damaged portions of the knee, and capping the bony surfaces with man-made prosthetic implants. A total knee replacement repositions the knee into proper alignment and replicates the original function, allowing for a near normal range of motion. Common reasons for undergoing a total knee replacement include severe pain, stiffness, chronic inflammation or degeneration that limits everyday activities; pain that interferes with sleep; and mild knee deformity such as bowing inward (varus) or outward (valgus). Expect to stay in the hospital for one to three days following surgery.
