  • Advanced Diagnostic Testing for Reflux Conditions at OMC

At Osceola Medical Center’s Heartburn and Reflux Center, we understand the importance of accurate diagnosis in managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other reflux-related conditions. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic tools allow us to assess your condition precisely and develop effective treatment plans. Here’s an overview of the advanced diagnostic tests we offer. EGD and Bravo pH Monitoring: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a procedure that uses a flexible tube with a light and camera to visualize the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and upper intestines. This helps us identify any inflammation, ulcers, or other abnormalities that may be contributing to your symptoms. Bravo pH monitoring involves attaching a small capsule to the lining of your esophagus during the EGD. This capsule measures the pH levels in your esophagus over a 48-hour period, providing detailed information about acid exposure and reflux severity. Esophageal Manometry: Esophageal manometry is a test that measures the rhythmic muscle contractions of your esophagus when you swallow. It also measures the force and coordination of these contractions. This test helps diagnose motility disorders, which can contribute to reflux symptoms and guide appropriate treatment. EndoFLIP: EndoFLIP (Endolumenal Functional Lumen Imaging Probe) is an advanced diagnostic tool that provides real-time measurements of the esophagus' dimensions and pressure. This allows us to accurately assess esophageal function and tailor treatment plans to your specific needs. Gastric Emptying Studies: Gastric emptying studies measure how quickly food leaves your stomach. Delayed gastric emptying can lead to reflux symptoms and requires specific management strategies. This test involves eating a meal containing a small amount of radioactive material, which allows us to track the movement of food through your digestive system using a special camera. Why Advanced Diagnostics Matter: Accurate diagnosis is crucial in managing reflux conditions effectively. These advanced diagnostic tests provide detailed information about the underlying causes of your symptoms, allowing us to develop personalized treatment plans. Whether it’s through lifestyle modifications, medications, or surgical interventions, having precise diagnostic information ensures the best possible outcomes. Our Comprehensive Care Approach: At Osceola Medical Center’s Heartburn and Reflux Center, we offer a full spectrum of services to manage and alleviate reflux conditions. • Understanding Sleep Studies at OMC

Sleep studies are crucial diagnostic tools used by healthcare professionals to understand and treat sleep disorders effectively. At Osceola Medical Center's Sleep Clinic, we offer comprehensive sleep studies to help diagnose a variety of sleep-related conditions. This post will guide you through what a sleep study involves and what you can expect when you come in for your appointment. What is a Sleep Study? A sleep study, or polysomnogram, is an overnight test that records your physical state during sleep to diagnose disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and more. The test tracks several body functions including brain waves, heart rate, breathing patterns, and movements. Preparing for Your Sleep Study: Preparation is key to a successful sleep study. You will be advised to avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of the test, as these can affect sleep patterns. We recommend bringing comfortable sleeping attire and anything else that might help you feel relaxed, such as a favorite pillow or book. During the Sleep Study: On the night of your sleep study, you will sleep in a specially designed room that resembles a comfortable hotel room to create a restful environment. Sensors will be attached to different parts of your body to monitor your sleep stages, movements, breathing, and more. A sleep technician will be present throughout the night to ensure everything goes smoothly and to address any needs you may have. After the Sleep Study: After the study, the data collected will be analyzed by sleep specialists. The results will help them understand your sleep patterns and behaviors, identify any disorders, and recommend the most effective treatment plan. Following up with these treatments is crucial to improving your sleep and overall health. Conditions Diagnosed by Sleep Studies: Sleep studies can diagnose various conditions, including but not limited to sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and insomnia. Each condition has specific signs and treatments, and understanding them is key to managing your sleep health effectively. If you suspect that you or a loved one might be suffering from a sleep disorder, a sleep study at Osceola Medical Center’s Sleep Clinic could be the first step towards a solution. Our dedicated team is committed to providing comprehensive care and support throughout your journey to better sleep. At Osceola Medical Center, we believe in the power of good sleep for good health, and our Sleep Clinic is here to help you achieve just that.

  • Is It Time to See a Specialist for Your GERD Symptoms?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is more than just occasional heartburn. It’s a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and potentially leading to more serious health issues. At Osceola Medical Center’s Heartburn and Reflux Center, we’re here to help you understand GERD, its symptoms, and when it’s time to seek professional care. What is GERD? GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to close properly, allowing stomach acid to escape into the esophagus. This backflow, or reflux, irritates the lining of the esophagus and can cause persistent symptoms. Unlike occasional acid reflux, GERD is a chronic condition that requires medical attention. Common Symptoms: GERD presents a variety of symptoms that can significantly impact daily life. These include: - Heartburn: A burning sensation in the chest, often after eating or at night. - Regurgitation: The sensation of acid backing up into your throat or mouth, producing a sour or bitter taste. - Nausea and Vomiting: Feeling nauseous or experiencing vomiting, particularly after meals. - Epigastric Pain: Discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen. - Chronic Cough and Hoarseness: Persistent cough or hoarseness, often worse at night or after eating. Causes and Risk Factors: Several factors can contribute to the development of GERD, including: - Obesity: Excess weight increases pressure on the abdomen, pushing stomach contents into the esophagus. - Smoking: Smoking weakens the LES, making reflux more likely. - Pregnancy: Hormonal changes and increased abdominal pressure can lead to reflux. - Medications: Certain medications, such as antihistamines, painkillers, and antidepressants, can contribute to GERD. - Dietary Habits: Consuming large meals, lying down after eating, and eating fatty or fried foods can trigger reflux. When to See a Specialist: If you experience frequent or severe GERD symptoms, it’s important to consult a specialist. Early intervention can help manage symptoms, prevent complications, and improve your quality of life. At Osceola Medical Center’s Heartburn and Reflux Center, our team is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools to accurately assess your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan. Our Comprehensive Care Approach: 1. Initial Consultation: Start with a consultation with Angela Fjerstad, PA-C. She will assess your symptoms and discuss lifestyle modifications and PPI medications. 2. Diagnostic Testing: We offer advanced diagnostic tools, including EGD, Bravo pH monitoring, esophageal manometry, EndoFLIP, and gastric emptying studies. 3. Treatment Options: For those on long-term PPI medications still experiencing symptoms, Dr. Felix Blanco, MD, provides specialized surgical procedures, such as TIF and Nissen fundoplication. 4. Follow-Up Care: We provide ongoing follow-up care to monitor your progress and ensure optimal outcomes. Your health is our top priority. If you’re dealing with chronic GERD symptoms, don’t wait to seek help.
